Enjoy a very old tradition in a South Tyrolean city: "Tuifltog" (Krampusumzug) in Sterzing (South Tyrol)!
Every year in Sterzing the traditional "Nikolaus- and Krampusumzug" takes place on December 5th. What does this mean?
"Krampus" is a mythical creature from the Alps. According to the legend, Krampus accompanies St. Nicholas during the Christmas season, warning and punishing bad children, while St. Nicholas gives gifts to the well-behaving, good children.
In the Alpine regions, Krampus is represented by a demon-like creature. Traditionally, young men dress up as the Krampus in Austria, South Tyrol and Southern Bavaria and roam the streets frightening children (and grown-ups!) with rusty chains and bells. This event is very special and you definitely shouldn’t miss out on it while being in our area.

The trip will take place on Saturday, December 5th. We will meet
at 14h30 at the train station in Innsbruck (meeting point: inside in front of the Bäcker Ruetz).
Then we will take the train at 14h52 to Sterzing (which is located only 45 km south of Innsbruck).
In Sterzing you can stroll through the typical old town which has conserved its traditional flair and you can visit the local Christmas market. Enjoy the Glühwein (hot wine), the Christmas atmosphere, but also the typical Italian coffee or an Aperol Spritz, and go shopping in one of the numerous shops.
The "Krampusumzug" will start at 18h00 and will last approximately one hour. Afterwards we'll take the train at 21h00 and will be in Innsbruck around one hour later.
